To ensure the longevity of your prints, display them away from direct sunlight and humidity. Consider professional framing behind glass for added protection.
My artwork creation usually begins with reading books on sociology, history and any non-fiction. These subjects will inspire me to visually represent an aspect of what I’ve read about, often pertaining to identity: its roots, the forces that shape it, and its possibilities. This subject reaches me personally as my mixed background of Egyptian-French-Canadian leaves me with many identity questions. My artwork tends towards a quiet and intimate vibe. The scenes depicted are often dark, desaturate, and atmospheric. Some depictions are more traditional of classical art, whereas others are fantastic worlds.
I start at my home studio with a thumbnailing process using pencil and paper. I’ll research the composition, the subject, and the level of abstraction vs. figurativeness I want for the piece.
I’ll usually paint a first draft digitally in photoshop. I’ve worked for years in the video games industry, and this is where I learned to use this software to speed up my process. It allows me to undo, and try many variations of a piece without too much risk. That said, under no circumstances would I use AI: I’m a classically trained painter, and I am very proud of the skills I’ve worked so hard to hone.
Once I’m happy with my digital rough draft, I take it over to the easel and reproduce it onto canvas or Masonite board with oil paint. In this last step, I tend to stick closely to my draft for the first layer of paint. When I go over a second time, I’ll detail it, often straying from my sketch, because the final piece needs to take into account the scale of the canvas, and texture of the paint. I work with oil paint made by Kama Pigments, a local art shop that makes their own line of paints. The artwork is then varnished and set to dry.
The original artworks are sold with a certificate of authenticity and are shipped in recycled cardboard crates with eco-friendly packaging.
All of my pieces are sold prints to offer a price range that makes art accessible to everyone. The prints are produced in Toronto by Allegra North York. The artwork is printed on Mohawk-Via Felt cardstock which gives it thick watercolor paper-like texture and is eco-friendly with 30% post-consumer waste fiber and is produced by wind-powered electricity. The paper is FSC Certified, Green Seal Certified, Lignin Free, Made Using Wind Power, Processed Chlorine Free. What’s more, this is archival paper, so the colors of the purchased artwork should stay vibrant for years to come.
